The Surface of Everything

The question was never whether you used it. It is whether anything has not.

Try to run a search without it.

Go to Google and the answer is already written for you, sitting above the links before you have scrolled. Switch to Bing and Copilot has done the same thing, a summary card where the results used to be. Ask the answer engines and there is no list to escape to at all. Those are not engines you search. Those are the model, answering. Google routes through its own model now. Bing routes through its partner's. Even the engine built to keep search clean bolted a model on and called it a feature. The one assistant you can turn off quietly resets your default search on the way out.

Every exit routes back into the room.

Six months ago this was an app you opened. You went to it, asked a thing, closed the tab, went back to work. Now it is the layer underneath the work. It writes your email before you do. It summarizes the thread you have not read. It sits under the note-taking app and the search bar and the phone in your pocket. The intelligence layer on the phone in your pocket is a rented model underneath, shipping this fall across two billion devices. There is no toggle because it stopped being a feature. It is the ground you stand on.

Which kills a question everyone is still asking.

Did you use AI on this? People ask it about essays, about code, about photographs, and they ask it like there is a clean answer. There is not, because the question assumes a surface that no longer exists, a place you could stand that the model has not already touched. Name the working writer whose research never passed through a generated summary. Name the analyst whose tools have no model underneath. You cannot, and neither can they. The person claiming purity is the one who cannot prove it, and most of the time the claim is not even true.

So the honest people stop claiming purity and reach for the next thing. Not "I didn't use it." Instead, "here is exactly what I did." Proof of origin. The engineering is real. Content credentials, cryptographic signing baked into a file at the moment of capture and again at every edit, readable in the data. Adobe is in. The camera makers are in. Apple and Google are shipping it this fall, a signature written into every image the model touches.

For photographs, this works.

For text, it cannot, and it never will. A photograph is pixels a camera can sign. A sentence is characters. You retype it. Nothing survives the trip. There is no signature you can carry on a sentence the way a camera carries one on a frame. So for the written word the only tool anyone has is a detector, and detectors are statistical guessing dressed as judgment. Feed them the Constitution and they flag it. The one instrument built for text is the one that does not work.

Now say the harder part. Take the images back.

Every photograph on every phone is about to pass through the model. The button that sharpens the image is the model. The one that changes the angle you were standing at after the shutter has already closed is the model. All of it gets signed, every photo carrying the same tag. And a mark that sits on everything tells you nothing. It was supposed to separate what happened from what was fabricated. It cannot, because it is stamped on both. Universal provenance is not provenance. It is a label reporting that water is wet.

So both roads end in the same place. Text cannot be signed. Images can be signed and the signature stops meaning anything the moment it is on all of them. There is no stamp coming to sort the true from the fabricated. That was the last hope, that the file itself would carry proof so no one had to extend trust to the person handing it over, and the file cannot carry it.

Which puts the weight back where it always actually sat.

Not in the pixels. Not in the metadata. In whether the person telling you what they did has given you a reason to believe them. That does not scale. It cannot be automated. It has a name attached and a track record behind it. It can be checked, and it can be wrong. Which is exactly what made it worth having, and exactly why everyone was so eager to replace it with a stamp.

Untouched is gone. It is not coming back, and it is not worth mourning, because it was never the thing that mattered. The stamp that was supposed to stand in for it is theater. What is left is the oldest and least scalable instrument there is. A person, with a name, standing behind the work.

No file will do that for you.
